Animation, FX-simulation, Compose and Render

Igor Klimovsky (VFX Producer):

We came to an agreement with Salyut-7 VFX-producer Pavel Semerdjan and VFX Superviser Alexey Gusev in October 2016. Our studio took two sequences: 50 FULL-CG shots with overall runtime around 5 minutes. And because of space setting of the film all shots have to be very atmospheric, sustained, slow in some sense. Our team did all animation, FX-simulation, compose and render tasks and besides the artistic challenge we had very tight schedule. Actually we had to deliver 50 shots in barely 5 month.

Next we’re worried about render-time because of the shader settings. All space station Salyut-7 was covered with a cloth and this cloth was shaded in a way that one frame is being rendered near 24 hours. Of course our render team found the solution based on process optimisation with extension the capacity of render facilities. So during production we had 200+ nods being rendering shots.

In January 2017 producers informed us about new release date — October 2017. According to new schedule we’ve finished all tasks in April and then had 3 weeks during July-August for minor improvements and polishing. With this extra time we’ve allowed to do more iterations (with average 5.6 iterations per shot) which is significantly increased quality of FULL CG shots.

At the end we had very interesting, challenging, financially successful and gorgeous looking project which we’re happy to present now.
